Why is 75% attendance a must in college||why is 75% attendance a thing in higher education in India?

The 75% Attendance Rule: A Modern-Day Jail Sentence for Students Like Us

Hi Friends, I am Aniket, a first-year BA.LLB law student, and just like many of you, I am constantly frustrated by this useless 75% attendance rule. It feels like a punishment rather than an education system. Why are we forced to attend college every day when learning is no longer bound to classrooms? This rule was implemented in the 90s when people needed to be physically present to study. But now, in the era of the internet and AI, it makes no sense. We can learn more in a few hours on YouTube than in an entire semester of outdated college lectures.

My Struggle with the System

In my first semester, I barely attended college. And guess what? I still managed to score a 7 CGPA by studying online. This proves that attendance has nothing to do with real learning. Colleges claim that attending lectures is necessary, but let’s be honest most of what we learn is irrelevant in today’s job market. We are being forced to memorize stories and theories that won’t even help us secure decent paying jobs. If firms are paying fresh graduates salaries lower than what a roadside chaiwala earns nowdays, then what exactly is the point of attending college 75% of the time?

Now, if my college had a flexible attendance policy. I could focus on learning practical skills, doing internships, and gaining real-world experience. I wouldn’t be wasting my time sitting in lectures that don’t contribute to my future. Instead, I would be preparing myself for a career that actually pays my bills in future.

The Harsh Reality of Our Education System

Most of us students are not just learners; we are survivors. Many of us belongs from middle class family and we have our personal and family responsibilities that require our attention. Yet, the system forces us to prioritize attendance over everything else. We are expected to sit in classrooms even if it means losing out on real work experience. And for what? A degree that doesn’t guarantee us a single good paying job?

Education in India has become a business. Colleges charge insane fees but fail to provide quality education. They enforce attendance rules to ensure that students remain trapped in their system, rather than actually helping them build a career. The world is changing, industries are evolving, but our education remains stuck in the past.

According to Business Today, the average starting salary of a law graduate in India is between ₹3-5 LPA, which comes to around ₹25,000 per month. Meanwhile, a successful street vendor or chaiwala can earn the same or even more. What does that say about our education system? It shows that attending college regularly does not guarantee success.

What Needs to Change?

The 75% attendance rule should be reduced to 15%. This would allow students to attend college when necessary while giving them the freedom to learn from other sources. Those who want to be actors, dancers, or athletes shouldn’t be forced into a rigid system that doesn’t align with their goals, and those who are able to manage things those students are allowed to do jobs so they can earn while studying and get some practical knowledge because students dont want to be rattu-tota and berojgar after graduation degree We should have the choice to study how we want.

Final Words

To every student who feels trapped by this system, you are not alone. We are being forced to waste our time in outdated classrooms when we could be building our futures. It’s time for change. It’s time we fight for an education system that values real knowledge over forced attendance. If we don’t, we will continue to be victims of a broken system that only cares about numbers of colleges and school owners profit, not our success.

Let’s break free from this attendance prison. #stop75%
